Year 5 Owls’ Class kicked off their Science learning with a bang through an inspiring trip to the National Space Centre, which included an immersive planetarium tour of the planets. This experience helped the children enormously back in class, where they confidently ordered the planets from the Sun using the mnemonic My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming. They also compared the length of each planet’s orbit and spotted the clear pattern that planets closest to the Sun have much shorter years.
Further investigations led them to explore early ideas about a flat Earth by observing how shadows behave on flat and curved surfaces.
The children have also learned about satellites, discussing the difference between natural and artificial ones and how each plays an important role in our understanding of space.
