This term, as part of their ‘Beating Heart’ topic, the children in Badger Class have explored different ways of staying healthy; they have tasted new and different food, talked about how important it is to get enough sleep and also learned about staying fit by exercising. They have also been investigating different parts of their bodies; they have listened to their hearts beating and their bodies feeling warm after jumping up and down, and made skeleton pictures during discussions about their bones. All of the activities have been very exciting but everyone agrees that the visit to the hospital ward at University Academy Holbeach was definitely the best bit of this term’s topic! With blood pressure monitors, real hospital beds and of course the wonderful Nurses (UAH’s T Level Healthcare students), it was truly a real-life hospital learning experience for Badger Class. Badger Class children investigated a life-sized skeleton, listened to each other’s heartbeats using the stethoscopes, watched the nurses take blood pressure readings and also took each other’s temperatures. Going to a medical appointment can be a worrying time for our children and having this experience with such relaxed and friendly students (and staff!) from UAH will hopefully make future appointments a little bit easier.

As part of the National Year of Reading, we have been holding events with a focus on reading here at Holbeach Bank. Glen and Witham classes have taken part in a virtual author session with Lucy Walters, a storyteller who bring stories and books to life- and that’s exactly what she did for us! During the session the children engaged with Lucy’s storytelling and actively took part in the activities. Since this event, children have been telling their own stories and creating their very own adventures! We have also held the second bookshare event of this year and this time it was the turn of Witham Class. Parents and carers were invited into the academy to listen to a story read aloud before spending valuable time reading with their children and sharing a love of books. The children loved this time and parents and carers commented on how much they enjoyed having the opportunity to come into the academy and take part alongside their children. We look forward to many more events throughout the rest of this year.
